romantic strasbourg

When I was planning our wedding in 1974, I dreamed of carrying a bouquet of lilacs and lilies-of-the-valley.  However, I was assured that it would be too costly, and since our wedding was tiny, I opted for a corsage instead.

Strasbourg, France is a city full of romance.  On the Saturday of our visit, we saw two bridal parties on the steps of the city hall.  It is a wedding convention in Strasbourg to pose with a bicycle, whether you are dressed in a white pant suit or a traditional gown.  Another enchanting custom is to profess your love with an engraved padlock attached to one of the footbridges over the Rhine canal that surrounds the center of the city.  On the Saturday of our visit, love was in the air and strolling down every street.

But to me, the sweetest symbol of love was the fragrance of these lilies-of-the-valleys in a small flower shop on a side street.  I wish I could have packed them in my suitcase.
